기체, 액체, 고체의 건조작업은 화학실험실, 모형 플랜트, 생산라인에서 널리 사용되는 기본 작업입니다. 결정화작업에서 화학적으로 결합된 수분은 열을 가하면 제거되며, 화학적으로 결합되지 않은 수분은 액상 결합 (liquid-binding) 물질을 첨가하면 제거됩니다. 상온에서 수분을 제거하기 위해서는 일반적으로 "drying agents" 또는 "desiccants" 가 사용됩니다.
